Terence Stamp (born July 22, 1939) is a British actor.
He was born at Stepney, London, United Kingdom, and has appeared in more than fifty feature films, first making his name in the 1960s as one of the most famous faces in 'swinging' London society. He played the title role in Billy Budd
, and starred in Far from the Madding Crowd with
Julie Christie. However, he gained considerable popular fame as the Phantom Zone prisoner, General Zod, in the Superman feature film series starring
Christopher Reeve.
More recently, he starred in ' (1999) as Chancellor Finis Valorum, in Elektra
and as Prince Lubovedsky in Meetings with Remarkable Men (1979). He played a transsexual in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994).
Stamp and
Julie Christie were a couple in the late 1960s. It is rumored that The Kinks song
Waterloo Sunset was written about them, although guitarist Dave Davies denies this.
