Michael Gambon Resources
Sir Michael Gambon (born October 19, 1940) is one of Britain's foremost actors, knighted for his services to the theatre. He was born in Dublin, Ireland.
In his youth, Gambon played romantic leads, notably in the early 1970s BBC television series,
The Borderers, in which he was swashbuckling Gavin Ker. However, his craggy looks soon made him into a character actor, and it was not until Dennis Potter's The Singing Detective (1986) that he became a household name. Even after this success, for which he won a BAFTA award, his career was patchy, with big hits such as the 1989 film, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover interspersed with less notable work.
In recent years, films such as Dancing at Lughnasa (1998) and Plunkett and Macleane (1998), as well as television appearances in series such as Wives and Daughters (1999) (for which he won another BAFTA), a made for TV adaption of Beckett's Endgame
(2001) and Perfect Strangers (2001), have made him one of Britain's most sought-after actors, as well as revealing his talent for comedy.
In 2004, he proved his versatility by appearing in five motion picture releases, including Wes Anderson's quirky comedy The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
; the British gangster flick Layer Cake
; theatrical drama Being Julia
; and CGI action fantasy Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Perhaps his most significant role in 2004, however, is Albus Dumbledore, Hogwart's all-knowing headmaster in the third magical installment of JK Rowling's beloved franchise, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, taking over from the late
Richard Harris.
He has also recently appeared on the BBC's Top Gear programme in which he launched a Suzuki Liana airborne off the final corner. The final corner has now been named 'Gambon' after this feat.
He will reprise the role of Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming blockbuster Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, set for a November 2005 US release.

EuropeBBC pulls plug on Bible drama series
A lavish BBC1 dramatisation of key stories from the Bible has been postponed indefinitely because of "funding and timing" issues. The Bible drama has become the latest BBC project to be dropped as the corporation faces up to the tough economic climate.Last week, it emerged that Nicholas Lyndhurst's BBC1 comedy After You've Gone and BBC3 comedy drama Phoo Action had both been axed at an unusually late stage. The cuts suggests that the BBC is having to take a long hard look at its development and production slate as it faces up to a £140m funding shortfall caused by the decline in the commercial property market, rising inflation, and rocketing utility bills. The six-part Bible drama was originally planned for broadcast on BBC1 next year and would have recreated epic events from the Bible such as Noah's Flood the murder of Abel by his brother Cain, and David's slaying of Goliath. Other stories from the New Testament were also to be considered for inclusion. The plan had been to narrate the stories with the voices of well-known actors. Sir Ian McKellen, Michael Gambon and Kenneth Branagh were rumoured to be in the frame for voiceover roles. In April, the BBC announced that it planned to dramatise iconic and important stories from the Bible and that the project would be funded with the help of international co-producers.However, the BBC has confirmed the project has now been postponed indefinitely because of "funding and timing" issues.A BBC spokeswoman said some potential co-production funding had been in place for the series but all potential partners had dropped out this year. One of these was the Greek broadcaster SKAI. It is thought that Italian broadcasters were also in discussion with the BBC over collaborating on the series. The spokeswoman said that the BBC "remained committed" to making a drama series based on the Bible. The BBC has instead promised to begin again with pre-production work on a new drama about the Bible due to start next year. The new series will "start from scratch", according to a senior source, re-examining all aspects of the now defunct series. It is also unlikely that the new Bible project will remain in the hands of BBC Manchester, which had spent the past year developing the series and seeking co-production funding from international broadcasters. The BBC spokeswoman was unable to give a likely broadcast date for the new Bible series.BBC1's Bible drama followed the successful four-part dramatisation of the last days of Jesus, The Passion, broadcast earlier this year. Co-starring James Nesbitt as Pontius Pilate, the mini series averaged 3.9 million viewers across Easter week.· To contact the MediaGuardian news desk email editor@mediaguardian.co.uk or phone 020 7239 9857.
