Marilyn Monroe: Quotations

  • "It's often just enough to be with someone. I don't need to touch them. Not even talk. A feeling passes between you both. You're not alone."

  • "My illusions didn't have anything to do with being a fine actress. I knew how third rate I was. I could actually feel my lack of talent, as if it were cheap clothes I was wearing inside. But, my God, how I wanted to learn, to change, to improve !"

  • "Please don't make me a joke. End the interview with what I believe. I don't mind making jokes, but I don't want to look like one. I want to be an artist, an actress with integrity."

  • "I'm a failure as a woman. My men expect so much of me, because of the image they've made of me and that I've made of myself, as a sex symbol. Men expect so much, and I can't live up to it."

  • "People are eager to see me. And I remember the years I was unwanted…. I feel a queer satisfaction in punishing the people who are wanting me now. But it's not really them I'm punishing. It's the long-ago people who didn't want Norma Jean… the later I am, the happier Norma Jean grows."

  • "What good is it being Marilyn Monroe ? Why can't I just be an ordinary woman ? A woman who can have a family… I'd settle for just one baby. My own baby."

  • "I am not interested in money. I just want to be wonderful."

  • "A lot of people like to think of me as innocent, so that's the way I behave to them. If they saw the demon in me they would hate me."

  • Sometimes I think it would be easier to avoid old age, to die young, but then you'd never complete your life, would you ? You'd never wholly know yourself."

Literature

Earle Hagen, Andy Griffith Show, Mod Squad, I Spy composer (RIP)

Earle H. Hagen, who not only composed the theme from the Andy Griffith Show but also whistled the familiar melody, died yesterday. He was 88 years old. From the Associated Press (photo from EarleHagen.net): During his long musical career, Hagen performed with the top bands of the swing era, composed for movies and television, and wrote one of the first textbooks on movie composing. He and Dick Rogers were nominated for an Academy Award for best music scoring for the 1960 Marilyn Monroe movie "Let's Make Love." For television, he composed original music for more than 3,000 episodes, pilots and TV movies, including theme songs for "That Girl," "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C."
