Hurry Up and Wait For Clean Jet Fuel

There's good news and bad news when it comes to jet fuel. The aviation industry is scrambling to find cleaner renewable alternatives to petroleum, but none of them will be fueling your flights any time soon. That may push cash-strapped airlines to embrace more abundant -- but dirtier -- options like jet fuel refined from tar sands. There's a lot of research going into finding a replacement for jet fuels, with airplane manufacturers and airlines, who are putting their heads together at the Eco-Aviation Conference in Washington, looking at everything from babassu oil to algae. So far, it looks like algae's the one to beat.  The case for algal fuel is compelling. Algae is cheap, it grows almost anywhere and it doesn't cause deforestation or strain food supplies. From a "well to wake" perspective that considers the entire process, from growing and harvesting the algae to refining and using the fuel, algal fuels become even more attractive. There's just one hitch. "Algae has been proven to be viable," says Rob Fyfe, CEO of Air New Zealand, "but we haven't yet discovered a reasonable process for large-scale processing."That isn't discouraging the airlines, which are jumping on the pond scum bandwagon in increasing numbers. Air New Zealand and Virgin Atlantic are the latest to join the Algal Biomass Organization that Boeing has backed to push algal fuel. KLM, JetBlue and Airbus also are exploring algae. Fyfe says algae is the most promising alt fuel because it can be grown anywhere. But he's still hedging his bets. Later this year his airline will run a test flight partially powered with biofuel derived from the obscure jatropha plant. Virgin Atlantic also is looking beyond algae. Earlier this year it launched the first-ever test flight of a plane fueled in part by biofuel derived from babassu and coconut oils. Sian Foster, who leads the airlines green campaign, says Virgin considered the flight from London to Amsterdam a success but doesn't consider it anything more than proof of concept. "We wanted to prove that it's possible to fly a commercial aircraft that contained a high proportion of sustainaby sourced biofuel," she says. "But we knew this wasn't something that could be scaled up for the whole industry." Scaling it up is what it's all about, and we're still a long way from seeing biofuels make a dent in the airline industry. MIT researcher James Hileman says the supply of biomass-generated fuels available in the next decade will meet only a fraction of the industry's needs. That reality has left the cash-strapped airlines slightly panicked. Desperate to cut their dependence on crude and looking for a quick fix, they're investigating fuels derived from tar sands, liquid coal, and oil shale. It's a move strongly opposed by the Natural Resources Defense Council which argues that these "dirty fuels" will sharply increase aviation emissions. NRDC says that tar sand extraction is fast becoming known as one of the most environmentally destructive projects in the world, but that refineries in Chicago, Denver, St. Louis, and Minneapolis are providing airports with jet fuel partially made from tar sands oil. According to the NRDC, United, American, Northwest, and Southwest are likely already using fuels partially derived from tar sands. The price of jet fuel is making running an airline these days close to impossible. And while carriers seem genuinely interested in going green, they'd also like to stay solvent. If truly green fuels are at least a decade away, they may be forced to consider dirtier alternatives in the interim. Photo: Flickr user bmass.

Dump the Pump!

It's "Dump the Pump" day, and scores of transit agencies nationwide are marking the annual occasion with a public awareness campaign aimed at turning people on to mass transit. The campaign comes as mass transit ridership is hitting record levels as commuters cope with gas prices north of four bucks a gallon. Hundreds of transit agencies have joined the campaign to educate people about mass transit. Some are hosting workshops to encourage drivers to ditch their cars. The American Public Transit Association has a nifty online calculator that shows you how much money you can save riding the bus or the train. Other agencies are offering free rides for at least part of the day to entice people to give mass transit a try. Some of the biggies include San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit (pictured), the Forth Worth Transportation Authority and St. Louis Metro. Check your local transit agency's Web site to see if you can ride for free. It beats sitting in traffic. Photo by Flickr user Thomas Hawk.
