George Arliss (April 10, 1868 – February 5, 1946) was a British actor, born in London. Beginning on the stage, Arliss began his film career with
The Devil in 1921, followed by Disraeli
. He remade Disraeli in 1929 (and won the Academy Award for Best Actor), converting from a silent film star to the talkies.
He appeared in several historical films, such as Alexander Hamilton
, Voltaire
and Cardinal Richelieu.
Arliss published two volumes of autobiography:
Up the Years from Bloomsbury (1927) and
My Ten Years in the Studios (1940).
