The Los Angeles Opera has staged The Fly, an operatic re-imagination of David Cronenberg's incredible 1986 film. Indeed, the opera was directed by Cronenberg himself and features original music by Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings) who also composed the film's soundtrack. Placido Domingo conducts. As a huge fan of Cronenberg's films, I hope I have the opportunity to see his work in this medium. The opera's Web site is rich with video and photos including set designs and production sketches. Creators of an opera version of The Fly insisted that they weren't trying to reproduce director David Cronenberg's movie onstage, but rather that they set out to do a new work that, like its title creature, is a mutation and hybrid, based in part on the 1986 SF film and George Langelaan's original short story of the same name.
